As some of you may be aware, there has been some confusion on this year’s tax notices in regards to the $10 Fire Protection Fee.  The manner in which the fee is assessed was changed beginning this year to include all parcels, regardless of whether or not a structure exists on said parcel.  Due to an oversight, the fee has been inadvertently assessed on residents in the county’s three municipalities.  The fee should only be assessed on those properties in the unincorporated areas of the county.  Amended tax notices will be sent out to those taxpayers in the municipalities as soon as possible.  For anyone living in Wrightsville, Kite, or Adrian who has already paid their tax bill in full, including the fire fee, that fee will be refunded to you.  We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused, and steps are being taken to ensure that the fee is assessed fairly and appropriately.

The Fire Protection Fee benefits everyone in the county, but is considered mutual aid inside the city limits of Wrightsville, Kite, and Adrian.  The fee enables the County’s Volunteer Fire Departments to better enhance the level of service they provide to our citizens.  We believe that our volunteer firefighters and First Responders are the best around and provide a level of service that is unmatched by many of our surrounding communities.  The Fire Protection Fee enables the County to maintain this level of service and our commitment to making public safety our first priority.  Again, we apologize for any inconvenience that has been caused.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Board of Commissioner’s Office at 864-3388 ext. 4.
